Okhla Bird Sanctuary, located at the border of Delhi and Noida along the Yamuna River, is one of the most accessible and safest birding locations in the Delhi NCR region. Being a designated protected wetland, it offers a structured environment for wildlife photography, bird watching, and ecological observation.
Over multiple visits, this sanctuary has consistently provided a rich mix of bird species, occasional mammal sightings, and a well-managed ecosystem that makes it ideal for both beginners and experienced wildlife photographers.
One of the biggest advantages of Okhla Bird Sanctuary is its protected status. Unlike many open wetlands or forest edges in the region, this location offers:
Controlled entry points
Defined walking paths
Watchtower access points
Managed visitor flow
This makes it one of the safest bird photography locations in Delhi NCR, especially for solo visitors and early-stage wildlife photographers.
The presence of watchtowers is particularly valuable, as they provide an elevated “bird’s-eye” perspective of the wetland, allowing photographers to observe bird movement patterns across large open water and grassland zones.
Okhla Bird Sanctuary is known for its diverse ecosystem that includes both avian and mammalian species.
One of the highlights of the sanctuary is its seasonal bird diversity, including species such as:
Bluethroat (Blue-throat) – a small but striking migratory bird often seen in reed and marsh areas
Various species of ducks and waterfowl
Kingfishers and herons
Waders and migratory birds during winter season
The Bluethroat, in particular, is a favorite among bird photographers due to its vivid coloration and quick movements near water edges.
The sanctuary also supports several mammal species, including:
Jackals (occasional sightings)
Wild boars
Nilgai (Blue bull)
One of my most memorable sightings was observing a young Nilgai calf from a watchtower. Unlike the adults, which are generally calm and composed, the young one was highly active—moving energetically across the grasslands and exploring its surroundings. Watching this natural behavior from above provided a rare and intimate wildlife experience.

From a photography standpoint, Okhla Bird Sanctuary offers a balanced mix of accessibility and natural diversity.
It is suitable for:
Telephoto wildlife shots across wetlands
Behavioral photography of mammals and birds
Wide landscape compositions from watchtowers
The presence of elevated viewpoints allows for better framing and tracking of bird movement across water channels and vegetation zones.
Earlier, Okhla Bird Sanctuary had stricter photography-related entry rules, including higher charges for camera usage and restrictions on equipment. However, these regulations have since been relaxed.
Currently:
Entry is allowed with a nominal fee
Photography is permitted within standard guidelines
Camera access is more straightforward compared to earlier years
This has made the sanctuary more accessible to both amateur and professional photographers in the region.
Despite being a protected area, there have been growing concerns regarding infrastructure development near and within the sanctuary boundaries.
During my visits, I observed road construction activity along certain border areas of the sanctuary, which has raised concerns among birders and conservationists. Such developments can potentially:
Disturb natural bird habitats
Fragment wetland ecosystems
Disrupt migratory pathways
Reduce breeding and feeding zones for wildlife
Many conservation-minded visitors and organizations have expressed the need to carefully regulate such activities to ensure the ecological integrity of the sanctuary is preserved.
Wetlands like Okhla play a crucial role in maintaining biodiversity in rapidly urbanizing regions like Delhi NCR, making their protection extremely important.
Okhla Bird Sanctuary remains one of the most important and photographer-friendly birding destinations in Delhi NCR.
Its combination of:
Safe and structured access
Rich bird and mammal diversity
Elevated watchtower viewpoints
Seasonal migratory activity
makes it an excellent location for wildlife photography and ecological observation.
At the same time, it serves as a reminder that even protected ecosystems require continuous attention and responsible management to ensure they remain intact for future generations.
For me, Okhla Bird Sanctuary represents a balance between accessibility and conservation—a place where photography and awareness come together in a meaningful way.
