Bird Photography at Okhla Bird Sanctuary – A Protected Wetland on the Delhi–Noida Border 

Okhla Bird Sanctuary, located at the border of Delhi and Noida along the Yamuna River, is one of the most accessible and safest birding locations in the Delhi NCR region. Being a designated protected wetland, it offers a structured environment for wildlife photography, bird watching, and ecological observation.

Over multiple visits, this sanctuary has consistently provided a rich mix of bird species, occasional mammal sightings, and a well-managed ecosystem that makes it ideal for both beginners and experienced wildlife photographers.

A Safe and Structured Birding Environment

One of the biggest advantages of Okhla Bird Sanctuary is its protected status. Unlike many open wetlands or forest edges in the region, this location offers:

• Controlled entry points

• Defined walking paths

• Watchtower access points

• Managed visitor flow

This makes it one of the safest bird photography locations in Delhi NCR, especially for solo visitors and early-stage wildlife photographers.

The presence of watchtowers is particularly valuable, as they provide an elevated “bird’s-eye” perspective of the wetland, allowing photographers to observe bird movement patterns across large open water and grassland zones.

Rich Biodiversity: Birds and Mammals

Okhla Bird Sanctuary is known for its diverse ecosystem that includes both avian and mammalian species.

Bird Species Observed

One of the highlights of the sanctuary is its seasonal bird diversity, including species such as:

• Bluethroat (Blue-throat) – a small but striking migratory bird often seen in reed and marsh areas

• Various species of ducks and waterfowl

• Kingfishers and herons

• Waders and migratory birds during winter season

The Bluethroat, in particular, is a favorite among bird photographers due to its vivid coloration and quick movements near water edges.

Mammals in the Sanctuary

The sanctuary also supports several mammal species, including:

• Nilgai (Blue bull)

One of my most memorable sightings was observing a young Nilgai calf from a watchtower. Unlike the adults, which are generally calm and composed, the young one was highly active—moving energetically across the grasslands and exploring its surroundings. Watching this natural behavior from above provided a rare and intimate wildlife experience.

• Camera access is more straightforward compared to earlier years

This has made the sanctuary more accessible to both amateur and professional photographers in the region.

Environmental Concerns & Conservation Awareness

Despite being a protected area, there have been growing concerns regarding infrastructure development near and within the sanctuary boundaries.

During my visits, I observed road construction activity along certain border areas of the sanctuary, which has raised concerns among birders and conservationists. Such developments can potentially:

• Reduce breeding and feeding zones for wildlife

Final Thoughts

Okhla Bird Sanctuary remains one of the most important and photographer-friendly birding destinations in Delhi NCR.
