Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary, located near Gurgaon and not far from Chandu Budhera, is one of the safest and most structured birding destinations in the Delhi NCR region. Unlike more remote wetlands, Sultanpur is a fully protected national park-style sanctuary, making it highly suitable for both beginner and advanced bird photographers.
One important practical detail to remember is that the sanctuary is closed on Tuesdays, so planning visits around this schedule is essential.
Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary stands out because of its:
Protected and regulated entry system
Clearly marked walking trails
Watchtower viewpoints for bird observation
Managed wetland ecosystem
This makes it significantly safer and more predictable compared to open wetlands in the outskirts, while still offering rich biodiversity for photography.
My visit to Sultanpur was part of a guided live photography contest organized by GP Pro, which made the experience even more enriching.
Participants were divided into groups, each led by an experienced photographer who helped:
Identify bird species in real time
Guide composition and shooting angles
Improve timing for action shots
Understand habitat-specific behavior
During this trip, I also met fellow bird photographer Akshat Jain, with whom I later explored other birding locations. Such interactions added a strong community learning aspect to the experience, beyond just photography.
Sultanpur offers a diverse mix of wetland habitats, including:
Open water bodies
Marshlands
Grassland patches
Tree-lined birding zones
This variety attracts a wide range of bird species throughout the year.
During my visit, I observed several interesting species and behaviors, including:
Darters
Cormorants actively competing for fish
Various waterfowl and waders
Seasonal migratory species depending on water levels
One of the most memorable sightings was witnessing a dramatic interaction between darters and cormorants while hunting fish—an intense natural competition that made for excellent action photography opportunities.
One of the most special moments of my visit was spotting an osprey carrying a fish in its talons.
This was:
My first-ever sighting of an osprey
A highly dynamic action moment in flight
A rare opportunity in Delhi NCR birding circuits
Watching the osprey glide over the water with its catch was an unforgettable wildlife photography moment, combining motion, light, and precision in a single frame.
From a photography perspective, Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary offers:
Excellent bird-in-flight opportunities
Behavioral wildlife photography (feeding, hunting, interaction)
Stable shooting conditions from designated viewpoints
Wide-angle landscape compositions of wetlands
The structured environment allows photographers to focus more on timing and observation rather than navigating difficult terrain.
Compared to more remote and risky locations like Chandu Budhera, Sultanpur is:
Much safer and well-managed
Easier to access and navigate
Better suited for group visits and guided tours
More consistent in bird sightings due to protected status
This makes it an ideal location for learning bird photography in a controlled environment before moving on to more challenging wetlands.
Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary remains one of the most rewarding and beginner-friendly birding destinations in Delhi NCR.
The combination of:
Structured access
Rich wetland biodiversity
Guided learning experiences
Rare sightings like the osprey
makes it a highly valuable location for wildlife photographers.
For me, Sultanpur represents the importance of guided exploration in bird photography—where structured environments and community learning can lead to some of the most memorable wildlife encounters.
